GREEN MINDED: Simple Steps to Save the Earth

The weird weather we’ve been having has me all freaked out about global warming. What else could explain the warm sunny days turning into freezing rainy days we’ve had this past winter?  And if you’ve watched “The Inconvenient Truth” and care about your kids’ future and the future of our planet, you will agree that it is time for us to take action.  You don’t have to go out and buy a hybrid car (although that would be sweet) or install solar-panels in your home tomorrow. Take these baby steps and start making a difference.

  • Recycle wisely. Yes, you take the newspapers and bottles out once a week but perhaps its time to kick it up a notch. For example, you can use products in containers that can be recycled or reused. Reuse everything. Let your little picassos scribble on the back of all that junk mail! Make musical instruments out of those empty coffee cans.
  • Save water. Turn the tap off while you brush or shave. Do not use the toilet as a waste basket – with each flush, water is wasted. Do less laundry – if it’s not dirty, don’t wash it.
  • Replace disposable goods with reusable goods. For example, you can use rechargeable batteries for all those kids’ toys instead of having to buy the bix box of double AAs.
  • Bag it. Bring your own canvas reusable bag to the grocery store the next time you shop. Check out the selection at
  • Donate old cell phones. Okay, so after you’ve given one to your toddler to play with, find a charity that recycles cell phones at or find a drop off site at  — END
